Daylilies are still a workhorse for any garden, from a municipal parking lot planting to a cottage garden or used on the moist edges of a rain filtration garden. They are long-lived and require very little maintenance beyond initial site prepation, mulching and perhaps dividing old clumps to produce more flowers. They rarely spread by seed, and are slowly spreading; they work well with many other perennials and shrubs. For the adventurous, daylily buds and flower petals are edible and used in Asian cooking.
Recommendations for growing Daylilies
Daylilies will adapt to almost any soil, but prefer something near average to moist, slightly acidic well-drained loam. They adapt well to drought and hot locations, but can get leaf scorch on the driest sites mid-summer. Flowering is enhanced on full sun sites with good moisture, so mulch is highly recommended and tolerated. Low maintenance once established. Over time though, clumps may become crowded and produce less flowers, division is easy early spring and late fall to rejuvenate.
